What is a Semester School?

Semester schools are a growing and increasingly popular phenomenon.

Much like a “semester abroad” during college, a semester school gives high school students a chance to step out of their regular school and into an exceptional educational setting, while still continuing their required academic studies.

At School in the Woods students gain an edge in the competitive college application process:

  • Being provided with a unique and noteworthy experience that sets them apart from other applicants.
  • Students gain insight and independence to highlight their meaningful experience in college application essays and interviews.
  • Students gain the ability to communicate a diverse group of highly motivated peers with similar interests and goals.
  • A head start on developing decision making and life skills necessary being successful in college and beyond.
  • Students complete a Capstone Project, with portfolio for college applications.
  • Students gain service-learning experience and exposure to alternative careers.

A semester school experience can:

  • Allow a student to fully immerse themselves in a subject area.
  • Widen a student’s range of skills and interests.
  • Increase the maturity level and independence of the student.
  • Build relationships with motivated peers that will last a lifetime.
  • Invest a student in their own education building a new motivation for learning.
  • Teach time management and long term project prioritization.
  • Build intrinsic motivation in the student.
