Steward is a residential environmental science and outdoor education semester school for middle school students. Steward’s rigorous academic curriculum aligns with traditional middle school courses while particularly focusing on hands-on environmental science and ethics. Students spend at least four weeks of each semester on outdoor adventure expeditions. Learning how to live in intentional community with a focus on sustainable practices is at the core of our program. Students leave Steward with a stronger sense of self and are prepared to think critically, communicate effectively, organize themselves independently, and be the leaders and stewards of tomorrow.

Steward is a program of Incarnation Camp and Conference Center, an Episcopal non-profit with a 133 year legacy of delivering life-changing education, retreat and camping programs to thousands of youth and adults each year. Our beautiful campus spans over 740 acres in coastal Connecticut.

POSITION SUMMARY
Members of the Staff at Steward Outdoor School have academic, community and outdoor program responsibilities. Fellows are responsible for implementing a robust community and residential life program, as well as designing and leading outdoor education experiences.

COMMUNITY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Foster and implement a robust community and residential life program, mentor students in the development of an intentional community
2. Attend staff meetings and development training and other responsibilities/ learning opportunities as identified in contract
3. Mentor students in their social growth
4. Live on campus full time.  Be in residence with the students at least six nights a week.
5. Attend meals and community activities as outlined in contract
6. Instruct or assist in instructing students on Outdoor Adventure Expeditions each month
7. Design and follow a semester outdoor education calendar
8. Be available to work with students on assignments outside of class as needed
9. Serve as Advisor for students
10. Attend staff meetings and development training

OUTDOOR PROGRAM RESPONSIBILITIES
All staff members play a role in our experiential outdoor education program. Staff members may be expected to instruct or assist in instructing students on short, local excursions, as well as longer multi day trips.  These physically demanding trips may include, but are not limited to: bike touring, canoeing, rock climbing, or backpacking treks. Each staff member's participation in the outdoor program is formalized in his/her contract for employment, and is based on skill and experience level, as well as any physical limitations.

JOB SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS

• BS or BA degree required, advanced degree preferred.
• Experience working with young people in academic, experiential, camp, outdoor, or residential settings preferred
• Well-developed planning and organizational skills
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Ability to meet deadlines and proactively plan for multiple outcomes
• Experience in outdoor education program development, experiential education, and interdisciplinary collaboration preferred
• Enthusiasm, sense of humor, willingness to act goofy, patience and adaptability
• General comfort level working/ camping outdoors
• Possession of a valid driver’s license.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND SCHEDULE  

• Most work occurs on Steward’s campus; however Outdoor Adventure Expeditions as well as other excursions will be conducted offsite
• The ability to work long days in hot and/or cold environments and lift heavy gear and boxes is required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions.
• Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed to fulfill program demands

BENEFITS:

• $250-$400 per week based on education and experience
• Room and board on 740 acre campus with mile-long, private lake
• Paid Training (CPR, Wilderness First Aid, Lifeguard)

DATES:

• Semester contract dates are approximately August 27- December 16, 2018 with potential for 1-2 day  staff retreat before August 27
• Semester dates are approximately September 10-December 14, 2018
